Beginnings
In 2006, Kenny Keelin, Brian Lax, and Sean Woerter were
new members to IATSE Local 480 and started work as Set Medics.
Many sets were in indoor warehouses with low lighting and
large open areas. With open ears these three listened to crew
reports of difficulty in locating and identifying the medic
on a construction set or during the shoot.
The first idea that the trio came up with was to wear reflective
vests so that the Set Medic could not be missed (if up close)
and could be noticed at a distance. We have made several evolutions
in the intervening years and now our “trademark”
vests are not only functional but also comfortable to wear
(in our high desert heat). On each and every show, cast and
crew comment on the vests and note with appreciation that
they have never seen such a simple but effective tool employed
by Set Medics. We are proud to have led the way towards change
and progress in our field in this way.
After meeting other Set Medics of like mind and encouraging
talented colleagues to join the IATSE local 480 film union
to work as Set Medics, we sought to earn more work and make
ourselves known. Other Set Medics had “company”
names and some even had websites promoting them to potential
employers. The founding trio joined with some other Set Medics
and decided to invest in a website that would not only advertise,
but would serve them by providing structure
within which communication and better organization could be
achieved. ReadySetMedic.com was born.
Sadly,
Sean Woerter, one of our founding partners and a popular and
talented Set Medic, passed away on July 22, 2008. For a memorial
